The large area of Phaya Thai & Chatuchak actually covers two main area of interest as well as the many minor places found along the way.
Going out from Sukhumvit, the first area you will encounter is Phaya Thai. Located close to Phayathai BTS station, this is a red light district of sorts, kind of similar to a gogo scene, though catering to the local market. While not as developed as the more known area around Silom and Sukhumvit, it does offer a fair number of bars.
Moving further out along the skytrain line, we arrive at Chatuchak, with the famous Chatuchak Market. Here, you can find everything on sale, from Japanese fighting fish over furniture to clothing and perhaps a sculpture or two. It is a great place to browse around for all the things you never knew you needed. Next to the market, Chatuchak Park offers a bit of a breather from the hectic shopping atmosphere.
Around the market, you also find numerous bars and restaurants that get going as the sun sets. They are mainly of the local variety, with food and whisky being the main items offered, along with loud music and a generally good atmosphere. Being away from the centre of town, prices are also generally very reasonable. An alternative go at Bangkok clubbing for sure - who knows, it might be just your thing. |
